PORTSMOUTH’S request to play their first game of the new season away from Fratton Park has been granted by the Football League, with a trip to Shrewsbury kicking off the new campaign.
The club made a request for extra time to finish summer development work at the stadium and to relay the playing surface. They now have until August 10 to complete the work with their first home game the visit of Tranmere.
New signing James Bolton will get the chance for an early return to New Meadow on August 3, with the season starting against the side who finished two points and three places above the relegation zone in May.
Other notable fixtures see an early match-up with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on August 17, though the time of the kick-off may change from 3pm with TV expected to cover the game.
There were five very tight memorable match-ups with the Wearsiders, most notably winning the Checkatrade Trophy Final at Wembley on penalties, but losing out to the Black Cats in the play-off semi-final.
The home game against Sunderland is on February 1, 2020.
Pompey’s first midweek game is against Coventry at Fratton Park on Tuesday, August 20, while newly relegated Ipswich head to the south coast on Saturday December 21.
Boxing Day sees a home game against Wycombe Wanderers and on January 1 is an away trip to Gillingham.
