NATHAN THOMPSON has been handed a two-year contract with Peterborough United.
The 28-year-old left Fratton Park when his Portsmouth contract expired at the end of June, and he was widely expected to be playing Championship football this season.
But, after an unsuccessful spell on trial at Bristol City, the defender ended up working on his fitness with his former teammates at Portsmouth.
However, there appeared little chance of him being handed a new contract at Fratton Park, and Peterborough confirmed on Friday he had signed at London Road.
Posh manager Darren Ferguson said: “Nathan is a very good right back; he is athletic, aggressive and has great experience. I will be honest and say that I am very surprised we have been able to get him. When he left Portsmouth, he was going to the Championship, but for whatever reason it didn’t come through.
“I didn’t think I would be able to get a right-back of this magnitude if I am honest, but when it became a possibility, we have acted quickly on it.”
