POMPEY have been handed a mouth-watering third round Carabao Cup tie against bitter rivals Southampton at Fratton Park.
An impressive display at Loftus Road on Wednesday night saw Kenny Jackett’s men progress with a 2-0 win over Championship side QPR with goals from John Marquis from the penalty spot and a Marcus Harness strike.
Their reward was to be handed a match-up with Saints – the first time the clubs will have met since both were in the Championship in 2011/12. The last clash ended 2-2 at St Mary’s in April 2012 with David Norris grabbing an unforgettable injury-time leveller.
Pompey are unbeaten in their last four games against Southampton including two memorable 4-1 wins – an FA Cup away success in February 2010 and the Premier League thumping at Fratton Park in April 2005.
The tie is likely to be televised and will be played in the week beginning September 23.
